Japan Opens 2026 Tech Internship Doors to Global South Talent

Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry has launched applications for the Global South-Japan Tech Talent Internship, a program designed to bridge the gap between STEM graduates from emerging economies and the nation’s advanced technology sectors, including artificial intelligence and semiconductor manufacturing.

The initiative, managed by Deloitte Tohmatsu Venture Support, targets university students and recent alumni with a background in IT and engineering. Participants gain access to professional mentorship and hands-on experience, with placements available both on-site in Japan and through remote arrangements. On-site positions typically span 1.5 months between September 2026 and February 2027, while online placements run for approximately one month.

To qualify, applicants must be citizens of countries on the OECD DAC list—excluding China—and currently reside outside of Japan. The program provides logistical backing, including visa assistance and travel support, to ensure a smooth transition for international recruits. Past performance metrics highlight the program's effectiveness, with 94% of former participants reporting a desire to pursue long-term careers within the Japanese corporate ecosystem. Interested candidates can review full eligibility criteria and submit their applications through the official portal at hub.techjapan.work.
