Maine Senate Race Faces $400 Million Spending Blitz

A massive infusion of outside cash is flooding Maine’s Senate race, where five-term incumbent Susan Collins faces a formidable challenge from Democrat Graham Platner. With total projected spending hitting $384 million, the contest has become a national battleground, pitting billionaire-backed super PACs against a grassroots-driven campaign.

The scale of the spending is unprecedented for a state with 1.4 million residents, amounting to roughly $400 per registered voter. According to AdImpact, the majority of the funds are flowing into pro-Collins groups, including dark money organizations like One Nation and Pine Tree Results PAC. Donors to these efforts include prominent figures such as hedge fund billionaire Ken Griffin and legal activist Leonard Leo, who have poured millions into attack ads.

Platner, who secured the most votes in any Democratic primary in Maine history, is framing the spending as proof of a broken campaign finance system. While his own campaign has raised $16 million, his platform centers on overturning the Citizens United ruling and implementing a constitutional amendment to curb corporate influence. As Senator Bernie Sanders noted, the intensity of the GOP spending suggests a party that is far from comfortable, despite the lopsided financial backing favoring the incumbent.
