ICE Agent Opens Fire on Fleeing Vehicle During New Jersey Arrest

An immigration agent fired shots at a moving van in a Stafford Township parking lot on Monday morning after a suspect allegedly struck the officer while attempting to evade arrest. The incident occurred near a Wawa convenience store, leaving the suspect at large and the community questioning the federal agency's tactics.

Federal authorities identified the target as Friedrich Castillo-Ormeno, a Peruvian national subject to a final order of removal issued in January. According to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the agent discharged his weapon after his vehicle was struck during the encounter. While the officer sustained undisclosed injuries and required hospital treatment, local police confirmed he is expected to recover.

Department of Homeland Security policy generally prohibits agents from firing at fleeing vehicles unless there is an imminent threat of death or serious injury. The FBI has taken control of the investigation, sidelining local law enforcement. The shooting follows a period of heightened friction in New Jersey, including a recent incident where Sen. Andy Kim was pepper-sprayed by federal agents during a protest at a Newark detention facility. Local residents in the traditionally Republican township have expressed growing unease regarding the disruption and violence associated with recent federal enforcement efforts.
