Marcus alleges that his experience working with Kilmer nearly forced him to abandon his career. According to the director, the production was plagued by the actor's chronic lateness, verbal abuse, and physical aggression. During the shoot in New Mexico, Marcus claims Kilmer arrived three hours late on the first day, requiring medical intervention for alcohol-related issues. By the sixth day, the situation allegedly escalated when Kilmer kicked the director in the groin and directed homophobic slurs at him in front of the crew.
Support for these claims has emerged from within the production. Debra Sullivan, a co-writer on the project, alleged that Kilmer made inappropriate physical advances toward her. Actor Jude Lanston, while describing his own interactions with Kilmer as positive, corroborated the account of the physical assault, stating that the director's viral claims were accurate. Others, including Jennifer Esposito and Christopher Gehrman, offered conflicting reports, describing their time working with the star as professional or unremarkable.
These allegations arrive against a long-standing backdrop of industry criticism regarding Kilmer’s reputation. Figures such as Joel Schumacher and Richard Stanley previously characterized the actor as impossible to manage. Kilmer himself addressed his polarizing history in his 2021 documentary, admitting to past behavior he described as bizarre or poor, while asserting that his intense focus on his craft often led to friction with those overseeing his projects.
