Under the glow of the Huangpu River, the 28th Shanghai International Film Festival launched today, marking the start of a week-long celebration of global cinema. The event, one of only 17 FIAPF-accredited competitive festivals worldwide, drew industry luminaries to a city now hosting over 1,600 screenings through June 20.
The gala set a high-profile tone by recognizing industry titans, awarding the Lifetime Achievement honor to actress Lisa Lu and the Outstanding Contribution to Chinese Cinema award to director Zhang Yimou. The spotlight also turned to the world premiere of Afterpiece, a drama directed by Keane T.K. Wong that highlights the collaborative spirit of Hong Kong's new mentorship initiatives. This year’s edition shattered participation records, drawing 4,100 submissions from 125 countries. The sheer scale of audience interest was immediate, with 250,000 tickets snapped up within 15 minutes of the June 5 release. The festival’s main competition jury, led by actor Tony Leung Chiu-wai, faces the task of evaluating a selection where 82 percent of eligible entries are world or international premieres.
Beyond the screen, the festival functions as an expansive industry engine. With the International Film & TV Market and the Belt and Road Film Festival Alliance—now comprising 57 institutions—the event prioritizes the bridge between creative talent and global distribution. Chen Guo, Managing Director of the Shanghai International Film & TV Events Center, emphasized that the goal remains to push films past linguistic and cultural barriers, ensuring that the festival serves as more than just a local showcase.
