Press Freedom Groups Decry CBS Purge as Precursor to Media Consolidation

A coalition of nine press freedom organizations issued a sharp warning Tuesday, characterizing the recent dismissal of top CBS News journalists as a calculated authoritarian maneuver to appease the Trump administration while signaling a broader threat to editorial independence ahead of a massive media merger.

The firings of "60 Minutes" correspondents Sharyn Alfonsi and Cecilia Vega, alongside executive producer Tanya Simon and executive editor Draggan Mihailovich, have sparked widespread alarm. Advocacy groups, including the Coalition for Women in Journalism and Reporters Without Borders, argue these removals serve a dual purpose: silencing investigative voices and aligning network output with political interests. Critics point to the tenure of editor-in-chief Bari Weiss, who has already pulled segments questioning administration narratives and shifted programming toward a "centrist" framework.

This internal restructuring at CBS is viewed as a blueprint for the pending $110 billion merger between Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount Skydance. With the deal expected to close by July, control over CNN—a frequent target of presidential criticism—will fall to the Ellison family. Reports suggest David Ellison has promised "sweeping changes" to CNN’s editorial direction, mirroring the shifts already observed at CBS. More than 200 journalists and over 1,000 entertainment professionals have signed open letters urging state attorneys general to block the consolidation, citing concerns that a landscape reduced to four major studios will inevitably stifle competition, shrink job markets, and facilitate improper political influence over public discourse.
