Allegheny Health Network Hits 11,000 Milestone in Cancer Research

Five years after launching its Biomarker Moonshot program, Allegheny Health Network has enrolled over 11,000 patients to refine personalized oncology care. Five years after launching its Biomarker Moonshot program, Allegheny Health Network has enrolled over 11,000 patients to refine personalized oncology care. By analyzing genomic data alongside blood and tissue samples, the initiative creates a comprehensive repository aimed at shifting cancer treatment away from a one-size-fits-all model.

The program, which operates across 30 clinical sites, currently adds about 250 patients monthly to its database. Participants contribute routine blood samples and residual surgical tissue, allowing researchers to track circulating tumor DNA—fragments of cancer genetic material shed into the bloodstream. This longitudinal data helps clinicians identify molecular residual disease, evaluate treatment responses faster than traditional imaging, and detect potential recurrences earlier.

Dr. David Bartlett, chair of the AHN Cancer Institute, emphasized that the initiative transforms individual patient experiences into actionable clinical intelligence. Beyond current treatment monitoring, the network is leveraging these findings to support industry collaborations and academic research. With the program now established, leadership is shifting focus toward high-risk population studies to improve early detection and preventative strategies across western Pennsylvania and the broader five-state region.
