Insta360 has launched two countersuits against DJI in the United States, asserting five utility patents related to gimbal and 360-degree camera technology. This legal escalation arrives just two days after DJI filed its own suit seeking to block the U.S. release of Insta360’s newly launched Luna Ultra camera.
The legal dispute centers on core stabilization features, including gimbal directional control, telemetry overlay, and panoramic video processing. Insta360 claims these proprietary technologies are present in several DJI product lines, such as the Osmo Pocket, Ronin, and Osmo Mobile series. Founder JK Liu framed the move as a necessary defense of the company’s intellectual property, asserting that the firm remains focused on protecting years of independent research and development.Insta360 denies DJI’s allegations regarding the Luna Ultra, which the company claims was developed over five years, beginning in 2020. Liu characterized DJI’s timing as a tactical attempt to stifle competition, noting that the lawsuit was filed on the exact day the Luna Ultra hit the market. Despite the legal pressure, the device has seen strong early performance in North America, reaching the top spot in Amazon’s U.S. camcorder category within its first 24 hours.
