A 2,170-mile journey from Key West to Bar Harbor concluded Thursday as retired Vice Adm. Manson K. Brown pedaled across the finish line. A 2,170-mile journey from Key West to Bar Harbor concluded Thursday as retired Vice Adm. Manson K. Brown pedaled across the finish line. The solo, unsupported bicycle trek, undertaken to mark his upcoming 70th birthday, successfully raised over $25,700 for Coast Guard Mutual Assistance to aid families facing financial hardship.

Brown arrived at The Town Pier in Maine to a crowd of Coast Guard members, retirees, and local supporters. What began as a personal challenge with a modest $3,000 goal ultimately generated more than eight times that amount. The funds bolster the relief society’s efforts to provide emergency assistance, disaster recovery, and relocation support for those serving in the military branch.

"Behind every mission is a family carrying the weight of service, sacrifice, and uncertainty," Brown said. The ride, themed "One Man. One Mission. Helping Our Own," navigated extreme weather and significant elevation changes across the Eastern Seaboard. Jason Wong, chief operating officer of the organization, noted that the campaign highlighted the ongoing needs of the service community, where requests for debt management have tripled over the last three years amid rising inflation. In 2025 alone, the society distributed over $12.1 million to more than 4,000 members, reinforcing a safety net for active-duty personnel, reservists, and civilian employees.
