Elsevier opens free Ebola research hub following WHO emergency declaration

The World Health Organization has declared the current Ebola outbreak, driven by the Bundibugyo virus in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda, a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. In response, information giant Elsevier has launched a dedicated digital center providing free, open access to critical clinical and research data.

The new Ebola Information Center aggregates peer-reviewed studies, clinical guidance, and early-stage findings to assist medical professionals and policymakers. By centralizing resources from ScienceDirect, The Lancet, and Cell Press, the platform aims to accelerate the global response to the emerging viral variant. Researchers can also utilize LeapSpace, an AI-powered workspace designed to map pathology, identify treatment pathways, and analyze data sets in real time.

Beyond published literature, the initiative provides immediate access to preprints via SSRN and curated data sets indexed from repositories like Zenodo and Dryad. Elsevier has waived usage restrictions for the duration of the emergency, permitting unrestricted research reuse and analysis. Esra Erkal, Executive Vice President of Global Communications, stated that the company remains committed to equipping frontline responders with essential scientific knowledge as the situation evolves. This move mirrors the organization's past involvement in previous health crises, including the responses to Zika, Mpox, and the global coronavirus pandemic.
