UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk has demanded the immediate removal of US oil and economic sanctions on Cuba, warning that a mounting humanitarian crisis is causing preventable deaths among children and crippling the island’s healthcare system as fuel shortages trigger widespread instability.
The situation has reached a breaking point, with medical supply levels plummeting to 30% capacity. Türk highlighted that oncology and maternal health services have suffered profound damage, leading to rising infant mortality and declining survival rates for young cancer patients. Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel confirmed these challenges, noting that existing medical programs are currently starved of the necessary resources to function effectively.Beyond healthcare, the embargo—imposed following the US-led abduction of Venezuela’s president—has slashed food production by 60% and sent costs for basic staples soaring. Türk condemned the sanctions as fundamentally incompatible with international human rights law, describing the combination of extreme heat, infrastructure collapse, and isolation as a perfect storm for the Cuban population.
These warnings emerge alongside mounting concerns of an impending military escalation. Pentagon planning to position troops and weaponry for a potential invasion has sparked alarm, prompting Rep. Nydia Velázquez and other Democratic lawmakers to push for a war powers resolution. They argue that the administration’s foreign policy is reckless, dragging the nation into multiple conflicts without congressional oversight or authorization.
