Joe Amabile on Brain Surgery Recovery and His Marathon Goal

A routine full-body MRI unexpectedly derailed the life of Bachelor Nation star Joe Amabile. Despite feeling no symptoms, the 40-year-old was diagnosed with an early-stage glioma. After undergoing a craniotomy in September, he is now navigating a rigorous recovery while training for the New York City Marathon.

The discovery occurred after Amabile’s wife, Serena Pitt, convinced him to undergo a preventative scan. What started as a birthday check-up became a medical emergency when doctors identified a blueberry-sized lesion. Amabile credits the early detection for the successful removal of the tumor, though he remains in a long-term recovery process that will extend through the end of the year.

Amabile describes the post-surgical period as challenging, noting lingering light sensitivity and the need for daily medication. To manage potential residual cancer cells, he is currently taking an IDH inhibitor and has committed to follow-up MRIs every three months. Despite the uncertainty, he has channeled his energy into preparing for the New York City Marathon. He says the training serves as a vital anchor, offering him a sense of control in a situation where so much remains unpredictable.

Throughout the ordeal, Pitt has remained a constant support, publicly reaffirming their commitment as they navigate their most difficult chapter since meeting on Bachelor in Paradise. Amabile, who gained fame as "Grocery Store Joe," is now using his platform to highlight the importance of financial and personal preparation for life’s unexpected turns. He maintains a positive outlook, focusing on small milestones as he prepares for his next major medical assessment in late November.
