Val Chmerkovskiy Addresses DWTS Suspension After Controversial Post

Professional dancer Val Chmerkovskiy is sitting out a week of Dancing With the Stars following a social media post that sparked backlash. The suspension stems from a since-deleted TikTok reference to the 2022 Oscars slap, posted after judge Carrie Ann Inaba critiqued a routine performed by Jenna Johnson and Harry Shum Jr.

Chmerkovskiy issued a statement via Instagram Stories explaining that his actions were an impulsive attempt to defend his wife, Jenna Johnson, rather than a calculated provocation. He admitted that utilizing the Will Smith-Chris Rock incident as a meme was a poor decision. He specifically apologized to Inaba, noting that she did not deserve to be drawn into the fallout of his lapse in judgment. The dispute originally began during the October 13 episode when Inaba flagged a prohibited lift during a samba, a technicality Johnson and her partner disputed.

While Chmerkovskiy remains sidelined, his celebrity partner, Jenna Dewan, will continue her competition on Dedication Night. Dewan is scheduled to perform a routine honoring her mother alongside replacement partner Alan Bersten. Amid the tension, Harry Shum Jr. attempted to pivot the conversation back to the show’s spirit, posting individual tributes to his fellow contestants on social media. He urged fans and participants to focus on the joy of dance rather than the ongoing controversy, highlighting the efforts of castmates like Guillermo Rodriguez and Tatyana Ali.
