Judge Dismisses Child Abuse Indictment Against Timothy Busfield

“So shines a good deed in a weary world,” Melissa Gilbert posted on Instagram this Friday, hours after a judge threw out the criminal sexual abuse charges against her husband, actor Timothy Busfield. The ruling marks a significant legal victory for the couple, though prosecutors have not ruled out new proceedings.

Judge Joseph Montaño dismissed the indictment on four counts of criminal sexual contact involving a minor, citing serious irregularities in the grand jury process. According to court documents, the prosecution failed to act impartially, specifically by withholding requested witnesses and providing improper legal instructions. The judge determined these actions violated the structural integrity of the grand jury system, necessitating the dismissal.

Busfield, 69, was originally indicted in February following allegations of inappropriate touching on the set of "The Cleaning Lady" between 2022 and 2024. He has maintained his innocence throughout the case, entering a not-guilty plea. His legal team welcomed the judge’s decision as vindication, while the Bernalillo County District Attorney’s Office confirmed they are currently evaluating their options regarding future action. Gilbert has remained a vocal defender of her husband, previously telling Good Morning America she was "100 percent confident" he would be exonerated.
