Lacianne Carriere Remembers Brother RJ Mitte’s Devotion to Family

“I not only just lost a brother, I lost my father,” Lacianne Carriere said during a memorial service in Brownsville, Texas, on October 16. Her tribute honored the late actor RJ Mitte, who assumed a parental role early in her life after their mother suffered a paralyzing accident.

The "Breaking Bad" actor, who died at 34, provided for his family from a young age. Carriere shared that his influence shaped her identity, from the music she listens to the games she plays. Mitte previously confirmed this responsibility in a 2016 interview, noting that he took over caregiving duties for his sister—including feeding and bathing her—while also becoming the family’s primary breadwinner by age 13. He managed these burdens while navigating his own life with cerebral palsy.

Beyond his home life, Mitte maintained deep roots in Brownsville, where he served as president of the Roy F. and Joann Cole Mitte Foundation. The organization, founded by his grandparents, funded local arts and education projects, including the Mitte Cultural District. Carriere pledged to continue this philanthropic work, urging those struggling to seek support rather than isolating themselves. While his mother, Dyna, attended the service, she chose to remember her son’s legacy of kindness through a separate statement, highlighting his dedication to the "Breaking Bad" cast and his passion for advocacy. His career, which earned him a SAG-AFTRA Harold Russell Award, remained a touchstone for his professional pride.
