Brooklyn Shop Owner Claims Kelly Clarkson Sparked Harassment Campaign

A routine retail dispute over a $15,000 mechanical bird has spiraled into a public safety crisis for a Brooklyn shop. Art of Play co-owner Adam Rubin now alleges that Kelly Clarkson’s viral criticism of his staff triggered a wave of harassment, doxxing, and intimidation that has left his employees feeling unsafe.

The conflict began on October 10 when the singer accused an employee of treating her dismissively, comparing the encounter to a scene from Pretty Woman. Clarkson posted her grievances to her massive social media following, leading to a deluge of negative reviews and aggressive behavior directed at the store. Rubin, who was recovering from a medical procedure at the time, claims he had to return to work to protect his staff from people yelling outside and threatening callers.

At the heart of the disagreement is a mechanical bird named Molly. Clarkson pointed to a $15,000 price tag as evidence that the shop lied about the item being unavailable for purchase. The store maintains the tag belonged to a similar piece by artist Bliss Kolb and that the bird in the store was a permanent fixture. While Clarkson’s representatives have suggested her frustration was a rare outburst, Rubin characterizes her actions as a disproportionate abuse of celebrity power. Despite the ongoing tension and the shop’s mock-inflation of the bird's price to $15 million, Rubin claims the singer remains welcome to return to the store.
