James McAvoy Recalls Targeted Bullying on Band of Brothers Set

James McAvoy’s professional debut on the set of the 2001 war drama Band of Brothers remains marred by a hostile hazing incident. Fresh out of acting school, the future star found himself singled out by a group of veteran co-stars who mocked his significant role in the production.

During an appearance on Watch What Happens Live, McAvoy revealed that his arrival on set triggered resentment among actors who had been working for months with fewer lines. He recounted how a specific co-star organized a group to point and laugh at him for several minutes. While the actor declined to name his tormentor, he noted that the incident soured what was otherwise a formative experience, dropping his personal rating of the project from a nine to a two.

Support came from fellow actors Dexter Fletcher and Robin Laing, who pulled McAvoy aside to shield him from the harassment. The actor noted that the jealousy stemmed from his arrival as a newcomer with a substantial character arc, which clearly irritated those already established in the series. Despite the trauma of his first day, McAvoy has since built a prolific career, though he remains selective about his projects to balance his professional ambitions with his life as a father.
