Keri Russell Recalls On-Set Romance and Disguises in The Americans

While portraying Soviet sleeper agents on the FX drama The Americans, Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys blurred the lines between fiction and reality. The actress recently revealed that their off-screen romance often played out in the show’s elaborate costumes, turning production trailers into a private playground during their early years together.

Speaking on the Dear Chelsea podcast, Russell described the atmosphere of their budding relationship as intense and unconventional. She recalled the surreal experience of falling in love while wearing heavy wigs and pearls, often retreating to trailers between takes. The pair, who have been partners for 13 years, managed to keep their connection quiet for a year before observant production assistants eventually uncovered their secret.

Beyond their shared history on set, Russell addressed their decision to forgo marriage. At 50, she views the institution as an antiquated formality, noting that modern independence removes the practical necessity of a legal union. She remains focused on their family, prioritizing their commitment over a ceremonial title. Additionally, she defended Rhys against criticism regarding his Emmy acceptance speeches. After he failed to mention her, she clarified that she had explicitly encouraged him to leave her off his list of thank-yous to alleviate his public speaking anxiety, choosing to shield him from unnecessary pressure rather than seeking a public acknowledgment.
