Kingfisher Taps OBI Executive Sebastian Gundel as Next CEO

Kingfisher has named Sebastian Gundel, a veteran leader from European home improvement retailer OBI, as its incoming Chief Executive Officer. Effective February 1, 2027, the appointment marks a strategic pivot for the B&Q and Castorama owner as it looks to accelerate its digital transformation and omnichannel retail capabilities.

Gundel brings over two decades of industry experience, having previously steered OBI’s evolution into a digitally enabled business. At OBI, he served as Chief Customer & Digital Officer before rising to CEO, overseeing key initiatives in marketplaces, loyalty programs, and trade expansion. Kingfisher Chair Claudia Arney noted that his background in operational delivery and strategic growth makes him the right choice to lead the company’s next phase of value creation.

The leadership transition will see current CEO Thierry Garnier step down on December 31, 2026. Following his departure, CFO Bhavesh Mistry will serve as interim CEO throughout January to ensure continuity until Gundel joins the board. Arney is expected to remain in her position as Chair through the 2029 annual general meeting.
