The transformation of the Sui-Tang Luoyang City site illustrates the scale of this effort. Once cluttered with factories and low-rise housing, the historic core required a massive human intervention to reclaim its archaeological integrity. Between 2007 and 2024, the city relocated 973 households and 63 enterprises, clearing 62 hectares within the palace zone. This cleared land now serves as a centerpiece for heritage display, integrated into a broader 200-hectare botanical garden that merges ecological restoration with urban planning.
Meanwhile, the Longmen Grottoes remain the focal point of the city's technical conservation efforts. The Research Institute currently manages complex projects to mitigate structural hazards like water seepage and rock weathering. By pairing this high-tech digital preservation with the creation of dedicated archaeological parks, Luoyang is attempting to move its history out of the archives and into the contemporary urban experience.
