The breakthrough follows a collaboration with the Treasury Department to ensure that general funding contributions from nonprofits meet federal charitable purpose requirements. Entrepreneur Brad Gerstner is the first to utilize this model, with his family foundation pledging $250 each to over 140,000 eligible children in Indiana. The funding targets Hoosiers born in 2023 and 2024 living in households with a median income of $150,000 or less.
Gerstner, who helped architect the legislation behind these accounts, intends for this effort to provide a financial head start for families. For the National Philanthropic Trust, the project represents an expansion of traditional grantmaking capabilities. By navigating the intersection of tax law and private wealth management, the organization has created a scalable path for other donors to replicate the Indiana program in their own states. J.P. Morgan executives noted that this framework reflects a broader trend of donors seeking more direct, long-term impacts for their charitable capital.
