Alaska Gear Company Targets Wet-Cold Conditions with New Deck Boot

During the World War II campaign in the Aleutian Islands, cold injuries claimed more Allied soldiers than combat wounds. Today, Anchorage-based Alaska Gear Company is applying those historical lessons in thermal engineering to its new Ankle Deck Boot VBX, a specialized footwear option designed to prevent heat loss in wet environments.

The boot features proprietary Vapor Barrier X technology, a system that pairs a waterproof rubber shell with internal wool insulation. By sealing the boot against external moisture, the design prevents the insulation from becoming saturated, a common failure point in cold-weather gear that can lead to hypothermia even at moderate temperatures. Rated to -45°F, the product aims to bridge the gap between heavy-duty deep-winter gear and functional everyday footwear.

Beyond its thermal properties, the boot includes a fleece-lined interior and a siped, non-marking outsole designed for traction on slick surfaces. Henry Richenstein, the company’s footwear category manager, noted that the product was developed specifically to address a performance void for coastal consumers facing harsh, wet conditions. The boots are currently priced at $199 and are available through the company’s retail locations in Anchorage and Fairbanks, as well as their digital storefront. This release coincides with a broader expansion of the brand's catalog, which includes updates to their established Bunny Boot line and plans for increased distribution across the lower 48 states and Canada.
