Dressed in a grey tweed suit and an open-collar white shirt, Brand appeared before the court as jury selection began. The proceedings are expected to span up to ten weeks. The trial follows a significant delay caused by the addition of new allegations in January, which prompted Justice Joel Bennathan to reschedule the hearings from their original summer slot to ensure sufficient time for the expanded case.
The charges, which date back to 1999, were brought to light following a collaborative investigation by The Sunday Times, The Times, and Channel 4’s Dispatches. Beyond the London criminal proceedings, Brand has faced separate civil allegations in the United States, including a lawsuit from an unnamed film worker who accused him of misconduct on the set of the 2011 film Arthur. Brand has denied all claims of wrongdoing, insisting under oath that he remained faithful during his marriage to Katy Perry and maintaining that his past sexual encounters were consensual. Throughout the pre-trial process, the comedian has adopted a defiant posture, describing himself as blessed while publicly questioning the integrity of the legal scrutiny he faces.
