Kelly Clarkson Sparks Review Bombing After Brooklyn Retail Snub

Kelly Clarkson took to X on October 10 to recount a demoralizing shopping trip in Brooklyn, claiming she was profiled and dismissed by a clerk who assumed she could not afford the merchandise. The singer sarcastically invited fans to visit Art of Play if they enjoy being treated like a pariah.

The singer compared her experience to the iconic scene in the 1990 film Pretty Woman, in which Vivian Ward is snubbed by boutique staff before returning to prove her worth. Clarkson’s post, which reached over 15 million views, triggered an immediate wave of one-star reviews on the store's Yelp page. Supporters flooded the site with criticism, labeling the employee’s behavior as poor business practice and profiling.

While some users defended the clerk, suggesting he may have been having a difficult day, the majority of the online community remained unsympathetic. The backlash extended to the store’s Instagram account, where users left taunting comments despite the business disabling most feedback options. Art of Play, a curiosity shop specializing in puzzles and home goods, has not issued a formal statement. The establishment briefly shared a customer testimonial praising its service on an Instagram Story before deleting the post hours later.
