Reporters Without Borders (RSF) published its 2024 findings this week, documenting at least 54 journalists killed globally while performing their duties. Of that total, 18 deaths are attributed to Israeli armed forces. The organization has escalated its response by filing four complaints with the International Criminal Court, alleging war crimes against media personnel. Thibaut Bruttin, director general of RSF, described the situation in Gaza as incomprehensible, noting that at least 35 victims were likely targeted despite being clearly identifiable as journalists.
The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) offers a broader accounting, reporting that 139 Palestinian journalists have perished since the onset of the war. Their data includes specific cases such as the January 2024 death of Hamza Al-Dahdouh, son of Al Jazeera bureau chief Wael Al-Dahdouh, who was killed alongside Mustafa Thuraya in a strike near Rafah. While IFJ recorded 104 journalist deaths worldwide for the current year, the discrepancy between reports stems from differing criteria regarding whether victims were killed specifically in connection with their professional work. Beyond the Middle East, the reports identify dangerous conditions for press workers in countries including Sudan, Myanmar, Mexico, and Ukraine, where hundreds remain detained.
