Brightly Secures First Carbon Credits for U.S. Food Rescue Initiatives

The project accounts for food rescue activities conducted between March 2020 and December 2023. During this period, participating organizations recovered 15.3 billion pounds of food, with 3.1 billion pounds qualifying for the carbon program. This effort resulted in the generation of 721,649 Verified Carbon Units, each representing one metric ton of avoided methane emissions. Independent agency BeZero Carbon awarded the credits an A ex-ante rating, confirming their environmental integrity.

Brightly collaborated with the Feeding America network and various independent organizations to build the data infrastructure required to quantify these climate benefits. Net proceeds from the sale of these credits will provide direct funding for essential logistics, including refrigeration, transportation, and staffing. With 198 Feeding America partners currently involved, the initiative serves communities across all 50 states, aiming to bridge the gap between systemic food waste and the 48 million Americans facing food insecurity.
