Inside DATALAND: How 84 Projectors Power the World’s First AI Art Museum

Opened in June 2026 at Frank Gehry’s The Grand LA, DATALAND represents the most ambitious collaboration between media artist Refik Anadol and Epson. The museum’s centerpiece, Gallery A, relies on 84 Epson EB-PQ2220B 4K laser projectors to turn reflective columns, floors, and ceilings into a continuous, multisensory environment. By delivering nearly 700 million pixels and 1.5 million lumens of light, the installation creates an immersive space where visitors interact with data-driven art that evolves in real time.

The inaugural exhibition, 'Machine Dreams: Rainforest,' functions through the Refik Anadol Studio’s Large Nature Model. This AI system interprets live environmental signals from 16 global rainforest locations, translating them into shifting visuals, sounds, and scents. Because the projectors were integrated early in the design phase, the engineering team could account for the gallery’s complex mirrored geometry, ensuring the hardware remains invisible while the artwork dominates the space. Camera-assisted software handles the alignment and edge-blending required to unify the massive projection surface, effectively masking the presence of the technology behind the display.
