The American Association for Physician Leadership is publishing Tobb’s guide to bridge the divide between clinical training and organizational management. While medical education focuses heavily on patient treatment, it often leaves providers ill-equipped to navigate the administrative complexities of hospital structures. Tobb, a DO, MS, CPE, FACC, FASPC, and FACOI, argues that meaningful improvement does not require a C-suite title or decades of tenure.
Drawing on her own experience founding the Cone Health Cardio-Obstetrics Clinic and leading the Center for Health Equity, Tobb distills the mechanics of institutional influence into a replicable model. The text outlines how to build stakeholder coalitions, secure competitive grant funding, and frame clinical initiatives for administrative review. Beyond formal strategy, the book emphasizes the impact of everyday interactions—such as targeted questions during rounds or persistent follow-up communication—as foundational tools for organizational evolution. While centered on the physician experience, the framework is designed for nurses, pharmacists, and advanced practice providers aiming to transition from delivering care to actively designing the systems that provide it.
