The GTF Advantage engine features a refined hot section, which Pratt & Whitney claims will double the time on wing compared to the current engine model. By offering 4-8% more takeoff thrust, the new configuration allows airlines to serve longer routes while maintaining full interchangeability with existing GTF fleets. This flexibility simplifies maintenance and operational logistics for carriers like United that manage mixed engine configurations.
Pratt & Whitney plans to shift its entire PW1100G-JM production line to the Advantage specification by 2028. For operators of the current GTF fleet, a Hot Section Plus upgrade will become available early next year. This mid-life maintenance option aims to deliver up to 95% of the durability gains found in the newer engine model, providing an immediate pathway for airlines to enhance fleet reliability without retiring existing assets.
