Lawmakers Challenge ICE Over Abduction of Tufts PhD Student

Surveillance footage from the scene shows plainclothes officers without visible badges intercepting the student, who was later transferred to a detention facility in Louisiana. Lawmakers contend the arrest appears to be retaliation for her public opposition to the U.S.-backed military campaign in Gaza.

In their letter, the signatories highlighted a pattern of university students with valid legal status facing sudden visa terminations and summary detentions. Beyond Ozturk’s individual case, the legislators requested answers regarding reports of unsanitary conditions, lack of religious dietary accommodations, and substandard water at the Louisiana facility. The demand for accountability carries an April 5 deadline, though notable party leadership, including Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries, did not join the call.
