Travelers are increasingly looking beyond major landmarks like the Colosseum or the Louvre, choosing instead to venture into the countryside, coastal areas, and natural landscapes. According to the latest survey, 64.9% of respondents cite a desire to explore beyond city borders as their primary motivation, while 53.4% have specific attractions outside urban hubs in mind. This behavior is not merely about finding new locations, but rather discovering new ways to experience familiar ones.
Innovation is driving this growth, with one in every four day trips this year consisting of experiences that did not exist in 2025. For example, tours in Pompeii now pair archaeological ruins with volcanology, and Chianti excursions have pivoted to focus exclusively on local wineries. Even the most recognizable destinations, such as Sintra in Portugal and Mont-Saint-Michel in France, are seeing quadruple-digit growth when offered through these specialized, refreshed lenses. Sean Finelli, CEO of The Tour Guy, notes that the industry is learning that tourism does not end at the city gates, and that combining high-recognition destinations with unique, expert-led experiences remains the most effective way to capture traveler interest.
