Daily foreign-exchange turnover climbed to $9.5 trillion by April 2025, a 27% increase from 2022. Despite this surge in market activity and the widespread adoption of real-time rails like ISO 20022 and stablecoins, currency risk remains the primary threat to profitability. Data from the 2026 International Trade Report by Bibby Financial Services indicates that 44% of importers and exporters now identify currency volatility as their most significant economic concern, surpassing even inflation and tariffs.
Technological efficiency has created a false sense of security. While 75% of Swift network payments reach their destination within 10 minutes, the speed of the transaction does nothing to mitigate the rate at which the currency is exchanged. Convera’s CEO, Patrick Gauthier, emphasizes that moving money in seconds is irrelevant if the underlying exposure has been neglected for weeks. To bridge this gap, firms must integrate risk management directly into their payment workflows rather than treating FX strategy as a secondary function. With the B2B cross-border market expected to reach $51.2 trillion by 2033, the urgency for CFOs to align hedging strategies with actual payment cycles has never been higher.
