The EL9 Ultra Short is designed to operate from runways as short as 150 feet, utilizing blown-lift aerodynamics and distributed electric propulsion to bypass traditional, congested airports. By positioning itself in the gap between driving and conventional flight, Electra aims to capture a regional market segment currently underserved by existing aviation infrastructure.
Under the new arrangement, Atlas will begin production work this month at its facilities, with initial airframe deliveries scheduled for 2027. The collaboration focuses on maturing the production architecture and establishing the manufacturing discipline required for high-rate output. This deal follows the FAA’s recent establishment of the EL9’s certification basis and aligns with Electra’s broader industrial strategy, which includes an $850 million production facility in Springfield, Ohio. With over 2,200 provisional orders secured, Electra is working to build a supply chain capable of producing up to 800 aircraft annually to meet projected demand.
