The controversy centers on a product marketed as a 'Kids’ Glows Under Blacklight Circus Clown' outfit, which featured a bodysuit and hood that many observers say mimics racist caricatures from the Jim Crow era. Target has since removed the item from its inventory, acknowledging that the product was deeply offensive to Black customers and employees. Despite the corporate retraction, Davis expressed that the retailer’s gesture failed to address the systemic harm caused by the imagery.
'These images laid the foundation and the ideology for every atrocity that has been committed against my people,' Davis wrote in a post on Instagram. The backlash follows a period of heightened scrutiny for the company, which previously faced criticism for scaling back its Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives. Following the product recall, Target shares dropped by 5%, with analysts noting that the incident has further damaged the brand's reputation among consumers who prioritize corporate social responsibility. Shareholder advocacy groups have suggested that such missteps highlight a growing disconnect between the company’s decision-making and its customer base.
