The parasite, previously considered eradicated in the United States, has been migrating northward through Mexico and Central America since 2023. Recent diagnoses in domestic animals have prompted the organization to release financial aid on a rolling basis, with applications remaining open through October 31, 2026, or until the funds are exhausted.
Dr. Stephanie Janeczko, senior vice president of veterinary medicine at the ASPCA, emphasized that widespread use of parasiticides in high-density facilities like shelters acts as a primary barrier against a larger national outbreak. Participating organizations must be located within or adjacent to USDA-designated infested zones and maintain a formal relationship with a veterinarian to oversee treatment protocols.
Qualifying groups may receive up to $45,000 for medication, $5,000 for veterinary supervision, and $750 per animal for direct clinical assessment and treatment. Organizations interested in the grant or requiring technical resources on NWS management can find full eligibility criteria at aspcapro.org/nwsgrant.
