Dave Filoni Leaves Door Ajar for Ben Solo’s Star Wars Return

While Adam Driver prepares to trade his lightsaber for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Lucasfilm executive Dave Filoni has offered a glimmer of hope that the actor’s journey as Ben Solo might not be permanently consigned to the archives of the Star Wars sequel trilogy.

Driver, who officially confirmed his casting as Mister Sinister in the upcoming X-Men reboot during Disney’s D23 event, previously spearheaded an ambitious project titled The Hunt for Ben Solo. Developed alongside director Steven Soderbergh and writer Scott Z. Burns, the film aimed to explore the character's post-Rise of Skywalker narrative. Despite the creative team’s enthusiasm, the project stalled when former Disney CEO Bob Iger rejected the concept, citing the character's definitive death in the 2019 finale.

Soderbergh has publicly signaled that the project is dead, yet Filoni’s recent comments at D23 have reignited fan speculation. When pressed on the status of a potential Ben Solo return, Filoni initially offered a cryptic, non-committal response before clarifying that the project is not currently in production. However, his specific phrasing—noting that the story is simply not present at this specific event—has led many to believe that an official announcement could be reserved for the 2027 Star Wars Celebration. Meanwhile, the character continues his legacy in print, with writer Charles Soule’s new five-part comic series, The Fall of Kylo Ren, currently filling in the narrative gaps leading up to the final Skywalker chapter.
