Ejae Recalls How Leonardo DiCaprio’s BAFTA Stare Caused a Vocal Slip

Performing before Hollywood’s elite at the BAFTAs, KPop Demon Hunters star Ejae found her concentration shattered by an unexpected encounter. While hitting a high note during “Born To Be,” the singer locked eyes with Leonardo DiCaprio, whose stoic, unsmiling expression proved enough to rattle her composure on stage.

The 34-year-old singer-songwriter confessed in a recent interview with The Times that the moment still haunts her. Despite the technical hiccup, the performance did little to stall the monumental success of the Netflix project. The film has since become the streamer’s most-watched original movie, while the track “Golden,” which Ejae co-wrote, secured both a Golden Globe and an Academy Award. The song also made history as the first K-pop entry to win a Grammy for Best Song Written for Visual Media.

Reflecting on a year of rapid transformation, Ejae described the surreal experience of meeting fans like Beyoncé and Jay-Z, who reportedly told her that their children frequently sing her music. While navigating her newfound fame, she admitted the transition from being a "nobody" has come with bizarre adjustments, including the inability to visit public hot springs. Meanwhile, the tables were turned for DiCaprio himself. In a 2025 profile with TIME, the actor admitted to being equally intimidated early in his career, particularly by Meryl Streep and the late Diane Keaton, whom he worked with on the set of the 1996 film Marvin’s Room.
