Senator Van Hollen Demands Resignation of Ambassador Mike Huckabee

Senator Chris Van Hollen has formally called for the resignation of US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee, accusing the envoy of failing to protect American citizens from abuse and detention by Israeli forces. The Maryland Democrat argues that Huckabee has abandoned his duty to advocate for Americans abroad.

In a video statement released Monday, Van Hollen highlighted the recent detentions of 20-year-old Sama Safi and 16-year-old Adam Karakrah as clear evidence of a pattern of neglect. The senator noted that he and more than two dozen colleagues have repeatedly pressed the ambassador to address the killings of nine Americans over the past four years by Israeli settlers or the Israel Defense Forces. According to Van Hollen, these inquiries have been met with a lack of accountability and justice.

Van Hollen specifically criticized Huckabee’s dismissal of violence against indigenous Palestinian Christians in the West Bank. When questioned about the surge in settler attacks on Christian villages, the ambassador reportedly pointed to his own experience as a Christian visitor to the region. Van Hollen argued that this response exposes a fundamental disconnect, noting that the ambassador prioritizes the comfort of evangelical tourists over the safety of Christians whose families have lived in the region for centuries. The senator characterized Huckabee as a complete apologist for the current Israeli government, declaring that he has failed to defend American interests and must step down immediately.
