Navigating Florida Auto Insurance: Beyond Minimum Requirements

Florida’s no-fault insurance system requires drivers to carry personal injury protection and property damage liability, yet these state-mandated minimums often leave motorists financially vulnerable in serious accidents. Insurance expert Wadih El Khoury argues that relying solely on these basic requirements is a risky strategy for modern drivers.

The state’s no-fault framework dictates that drivers primarily rely on their own personal injury protection (PIP) to cover medical bills and lost wages, regardless of fault. While legally mandatory, PIP limits are frequently insufficient for catastrophic injuries. Similarly, property damage liability often fails to cover the full repair costs of modern, high-value vehicles, leaving the policyholder to bridge the gap out-of-pocket.

To mitigate these risks, El Khoury emphasizes the importance of optional coverages. Collision coverage provides a necessary safety net for repairing one’s own vehicle, while uninsured motorist (UM) protection serves as a critical defense against the state's significant population of underinsured drivers. Choosing the right policy requires a shift in perspective: instead of prioritizing the lowest premium, drivers should evaluate their unique risk profile based on vehicle age, local traffic density, and personal financial exposure. Regular policy reviews remain essential, particularly when household circumstances change, such as adding a new driver or purchasing a vehicle.
