Sarah Lyons Named Head Athletic Trainer at USC

With over two decades of experience in collegiate sports medicine, Sarah Lyons will step into the role of Senior Director of Athletic Medicine Operations and Head Athletic Trainer at the University of Southern California on August 24, 2026, marking a transition in the university's leadership of student-athlete care.

Lyons joins USC following a distinguished tenure at Stanford University, where she served as assistant athletics director of athletic training. During her time there, she oversaw medical operations for over 900 student-athletes across 36 varsity sports, balancing executive oversight with hands-on care for teams including football and women’s gymnastics. Her background also includes more than ten years of service at California State University, Northridge, and professional experience with organizations like the United Soccer League.

At USC, Lyons will integrate into a multidisciplinary leadership team that includes Dr. Seth Gamradt and faculty physicians from the Keck School of Medicine. She succeeds Russ Romano, who will remain in the position through September 1 to ensure a seamless transition. Beyond her institutional roles, Lyons has held leadership positions within the California and Far West Athletic Trainers' Associations, emphasizing a commitment to health and safety standards that extends across the collegiate athletic landscape.
