Most Consumers Face Six-Month Horizon to Clear Short-Term Debt

Over half of U.S. consumers now expect to spend more than six months paying off unsecured debts, including credit cards and personal loans. A new survey from the Achieve Center for Consumer Insights highlights how rising costs are forcing households to rely on credit for basic necessities, straining long-term financial stability.

The June 2026 data, involving 2,000 participants, suggests that credit card usage for essential expenses remains a persistent trend, with 55% of respondents reporting this behavior. While the majority of households manage to stay current on their monthly obligations, the psychological and financial toll is mounting. Nearly 30% of those surveyed characterize their debt levels as unmanageable, and 54% describe their overall financial situation as poor or fair.

Brad Stroh, co-founder and co-CEO of Achieve, notes that what often begins as a stop-gap measure for budget gaps frequently evolves into a sustained liability. When income fails to cover spending, households are increasingly forced into difficult trade-offs. Half of those struggling with debt have already reduced spending on basic necessities, while others have delayed medical treatments or skipped prescribed medications to prioritize debt payments. Despite high rates of on-time payment, the data reveals that nearly one-third of consumers find it difficult to maintain this pace, citing a combination of insufficient income and fragmented debt accounts as primary obstacles.
