Retail Automation Accelerates from South Korean Warehouses to UK Pubs

From the launch of Ocado’s first automated freezer in South Korea to the rollout of computer-vision checkouts across Morrisons stores, retailers are aggressively embedding AI and robotics to solve operational friction. These deployments signal a broader shift toward data-driven efficiency, whether in high-speed fulfillment or on-site customer service.

Ocado Group has marked a major international expansion by opening its first automated customer fulfilment centre in South Korea alongside Lotte Shopping. Serving four million households, the facility introduces an 'Auto-Freezer' capable of operating at -25°C, while utilizing energy-efficient 3D-printed bots to optimize storage density. The site is designed to support dawn deliveries, aiming to set a new standard for environmentally efficient logistics through a fully electric daytime vehicle fleet.

Meanwhile, in the UK, retailers are tackling operational hurdles through targeted technology deployments. Morrisons has committed to installing Everseen’s computer-vision-based Evercheck platform across 200 stores to streamline self-checkouts and reduce queue times. Similarly, Asda has integrated the Auror intelligence platform to combat retail crime, reporting an 80% reduction in incident reporting time during a successful London-based pilot. In the hospitality sector, Ashton Gate Stadium has adopted Amazon’s 'Just Walk Out' technology for its concourse bars, while Boxbar’s container units successfully managed high-volume demand at Brighton’s On The Beach festival.

Strategic partnerships are also reshaping e-commerce and logistics. Klarna has expanded its reach by integrating its full suite of payment solutions into J.P. Morgan’s US Commerce Platform, while Etsy has tapped Asendia to simplify global shipping for sellers. Additionally, Lidl GB is scaling its food waste reduction initiative with Olio to 200 locations, aiming for a nationwide presence by the end of the year to redistribute surplus produce to local communities.
