California Hits Historic Milestone of 20 Million Organ Donors

Twenty million Californians have now pledged to donate organs, eyes, and tissues, establishing the state as home to one of the nation’s largest donor registries. This achievement, reached two decades after the program's inception, highlights a massive public commitment to saving lives through a streamlined state registration process.

The milestone follows a twenty-year collaboration between Donate Life California, the Department of Motor Vehicles, and the Franchise Tax Board. While the DMV remains the primary gateway for registration during license renewals, the state recently expanded access by allowing residents to opt-in through income tax filings. This tax-based initiative alone has already captured over 150,000 donor sign-ups.

Despite the record-breaking participation, the demand for medical intervention remains high. Nearly 20,000 residents are currently on waiting lists for lifesaving transplants. Officials note that a single donor possesses the potential to save up to eight lives through organ donation, while tissue and cornea contributions can improve the quality of life for more than 75 others. To mark the occasion, Donate Life California will host a commemorative event at the State Capitol on August 19, featuring legislative leaders and families impacted by the program.
