KANEBO adopts Eastman resin for premium cosmetic packaging

Japanese cosmetics brand KANEBO has turned to Eastman’s Cristal™ One IM812 specialty PET resin for the overcap of its Generating Essentials Treatment Lotion, seeking to merge high-end aesthetics with sustainable material standards in a design that emphasizes durability alongside a refined visual gradient.

The choice of material was driven by the specific demands of the lotion's thick-walled, heavy-construction black overcap. KANEBO designer Shinsuke Magai noted that the packaging needed to reflect the brand's “Progress Care” philosophy, requiring a look that conveys both refinement and progression. The resin successfully passed rigorous drop impact testing and retained its structural integrity even after post-mold painting.

Beyond durability, the material enabled a precise aesthetic finish: an opaque black base that transitions into a subtle transparent gradient at the top. Packaging engineer Shota Kawasaki confirmed that after evaluating various candidates, the Cristal One IM812 proved the most capable of balancing these engineering requirements with the desired visual impact. Although the product is primarily marketed in Asia, KANEBO opted for this recyclable resin to align with global environmental benchmarks, including future European Union packaging regulations.

Following a successful launch in January 2026, the parent company, Kao, plans to integrate the material into upcoming product lines. This move strengthens a multi-year partnership between KANEBO and Eastman, focusing on technical collaboration to meet the high standards of the luxury beauty market.
