Former Student Sues Berkeley Schools Over 1990s Abuse Allegations

The lawsuit alleges that teacher Lynn Scott groomed the student during a computer class, exploiting the classroom's physical layout—where large monitors obstructed the view of staff—to commit abuse. According to the complaint, the student reported the behavior to school employees at the time, but the district allegedly failed to investigate or restrict Mr. Scott’s access to children. Attorney Mary Alexander stated that the district’s inaction allowed the abuse to continue, resulting in long-term psychological damage to the plaintiff, who is now 39 years old.

The complaint asserts that district staff knew or should have known about Mr. Scott’s inappropriate conduct toward multiple male students but failed to intervene or report the incidents. These allegations have yet to be proven in court, and the Berkeley Unified School District has not yet provided a formal response to the filing, which is registered as case number 26CV200821.
