Blue Chip Casino Workers Join Teamsters in Landmark Organizing Win

Twenty-two slot attendants at the Blue Chip Casino Hotel and Spa in Michigan City have voted to join Teamsters Local 135, marking the first successful unionization effort at Boyd Gaming. The victory follows a June 23 march on management where workers demanded representation to address long-standing concerns over pay and working conditions.

The group, responsible for maintaining more than 1,600 machines and managing guest services, opted for the union despite facing aggressive opposition from management. Candace Todd, a slot attendant who spearheaded the drive, noted that the company deployed union-busting tactics and held mandatory meetings to discourage the effort, but the staff remained unified.

Dustin Roach, President of Local 135, is now calling on Boyd Gaming to begin bargaining immediately. The union intends to secure a contract that addresses benefits and workplace standards for the employees. This move adds to the growing presence of the Teamsters in the gaming industry, where the organization currently represents nearly 6,000 workers across the United States.
