Mahershala Ali Confirms Exit from Marvel’s Blade Reboot

Ali’s decision follows years of behind-the-scenes instability that saw the project lose its original director, Bassam Tariq, and cycle through multiple creative teams before disappearing from Marvel’s release calendar in 2025. Speaking to GQ, Ali expressed frustration with the studio’s inaction, noting that despite his contract and Marvel’s massive financial resources, the studio failed to prioritize the production. He stated that he has moved on, viewing the project’s collapse as a redirection toward more original storytelling.

The actor is now reuniting with Tariq for the upcoming film Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother, a project he credits with providing a sense of creative redemption. Ali explained that the new movie—a grounded action drama about a religious hitman—allowed him to utilize the physical training he originally undertook for Blade. While Marvel executive Kevin Feige recently admitted to feeling like a failure for not getting the Blade film off the ground, Ali insists that any further explanation regarding the project’s demise must come from the studio itself.
