The program recognizes excellence in two distinct categories: books of nonfiction and journalism produced by recognized news organizations, universities, or nonprofits. To qualify, entries must address the natural environment within Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, or Virginia. All nominated works must have been published between October 1, 2025, and September 30, 2026. Nominations are open to the public, including authors and publishers, with a submission deadline of October 1, 2026.
A national panel of journalists, environmental advocates, and authors will evaluate the entries to select winners who carry on the legacy of Phillip D. Reed, a founding trustee of the organization and a dedicated activist. Previous honorees include Catherine Coleman Flowers for her work on environmental justice and the ABC News team behind the investigation into environmental loss, "Our Inheritance is Washing Away." The winners will be celebrated during an in-person ceremony on March 18, 2027, in Charlottesville, Virginia.
