CPKC Names Gordon Trafton Board Chair Following Isabelle Courville Retirement

Isabelle Courville, the first woman to chair a Class 1 railway board, has stepped down from her role at Canadian Pacific Kansas City. In a move finalized by the company’s long-standing succession plan, veteran rail executive Gordon Trafton assumes the chairmanship, effective immediately, to oversee the next phase of the transnational network.

Courville joined the board in 2013 and ascended to the chair position in 2019, steering the company through the complex merger between Canadian Pacific and Kansas City Southern. A lawyer and engineer by training, she previously chaired the company’s Audit and Compensation committees. CEO Keith Creel credited her leadership as a central force in navigating the regulatory and operational hurdles that defined the firm’s recent expansion.

Gordon Trafton brings three decades of industry experience to the role, having joined the board in 2017 and serving as Vice-Chair since early 2026. His background includes a 33-year tenure across major rail networks, including Canadian National, Illinois Central, and Burlington Northern. Trafton enters the position as the company looks to leverage its 20,000-mile network that links Canada, the United States, and Mexico.
