METLEN Secures Landmark Gallium Deal to Boost European Supply

A significant shift in the critical raw materials landscape emerged today as Athens-based METLEN signed a long-term agreement to supply 25% of its planned annual gallium output to a leading US technology firm. This deal marks the first commercial contract for European-produced gallium, positioning the company as a key player in global tech supply chains.

The agreement centers on production from METLEN’s facility at the historic Aluminium of Greece plant. By securing a major US buyer, the company is moving to reduce global reliance on concentrated supply sources for gallium, a metal essential for the production of AI hardware, renewable energy infrastructure, and advanced defense systems. The development follows years of research and innovation by the company’s internal teams and the newly formed Critical & Rare Metals division.

Executive Chairman Evangelos Mytilineos noted that the material has already successfully cleared rigorous qualification testing by the buyer. The project holds significant backing, having been designated a Strategic Project under the European Commission’s Critical Raw Materials Act. Furthermore, the European Investment Bank has approved financing for the site under the REPowerEU framework, underscoring the project's role in the continent's industrial strategy.
